This digital PWM technique is used for minimizing the imbalance between subconverters in multilevel and multiphase converters. With a modulation bandwidth exceeding the average switching frequency and a simultaneous harmonic mitigation a large imbalance between subconverters may spontaneously emerge. This may lead to a large amount of circulating energy, reduced efficiency, voltage pattern distortion and in some circumstances even failure. This methodology allows a very rapid and effective restoration of the balance without any sensors and within a single clock cycle. At the same time it has only a minimal impact on the output voltage pattern (also noise and ripple). It also minimizes the number of switching transitions for the best efficiency.
